When Someone Deeply Listens To You
by John Fox
When someone deeply listens to you
it is like holding out a dented cup
you’ve had since childhood
and watching it fill up with
cold, fresh water.
When it balances on top of the brim,
you are understood.
When it overflows and touches your skin,
you are loved.
When someone deeply listens to you
the room where you stay
starts a new life
and the place where you wrote
your first poem
begins to glow in your mind’s eye.
It is as if gold has been discovered!
When someone deeply listens to you
your bare feet are on the earth
and a beloved land that seemed distant
is now at home within you.

So true, everyone is longing to be truly heard.
Reminds me of another poem that I wrote!
Gift
the sound of love,
is undivided attention:
its music is heard
universally.

I sometimes forget the value of listening deeply and fall into thinking I have to fix things. This is the most beautiful reminder I’ve ever read.

Thanks JoAnna, I was also really touched by this poem, I enjoyed its purity and its power. I think we live in a world that demands so much of us in so many ways, that we don’t always listen to what is close to us and we don’t necessarily notice how important it is, for our soul, to be truly heard. Thanks for hearing me (or the words of other). Love, Harlon

Thanks Isabel, this one really got me, on so many levels, I too was moved and glad you were as well. And I do enjoy listening to you – as deeply as one can in the blogosphere. Love, Harlon
